The Chicago Teachers Union voted early Wednesday to authorize a tentative proposition from the district that opens a path for trainees to go back to the class for in-person learning.

The vote by rank-and-file members for the proposed structure for going back to in-person classes was licensed prior to 12:30 a.m. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the proposition passed with 68% of the vote. The paper stated 5,000 members did not vote, which shows simmering stress within the union.

Jesse Sharkey, the president of the union, provided a declaration that read, “This strategy is not what any of us are worthy of. Not us. Not our trainees. Not their households. The reality that CPS might not postpone resuming a couple of brief weeks to increase vaccinations and preparations in schools is a disgrace.”

Some trainees might go back to class as quickly as Thursday, with the resuming of school phased-in by grade.
